Brilliance—How sparkly the diamond is

Brilliance is the simplest term you will hear when talking about diamonds, and this simply tells you how sparkly the diamond is from its middle to its edges. It is super simple and it states how well the diamond reflects light. This is determined by four other terms which you may already be familiar with: carat, clarity, cut and colour.

Carat—How big your diamond is

The carat is a term which describes how big your diamond is. Ideally you will always want to choose a diamond which is slightly larger than the carat you want because you may have to get it recut or it could chip. This would of course lower the carat value so you want to make sure it is slightly higher to start with.

Colour—Is it yellow or white?

Most diamonds will have some sort of faint colour in them, because this is just how they naturally form under the pressure of sediment and rock. Most diamonds will have a slightly yellow colour which is not ideal. And when choosing a diamond for yourself you will want to try and go for the one which is the closest to white. This will make it look much newer and shinier for longer than a yellow tinted one.

Clarity—Are there any small imperfections?

The clarity is what measures how many small imperfections there are inside the diamond. There could be traces of other items, small scratches or chips which occur naturally and are measured on a scale. You will of course want to choose a ring which has few flaws, but be aware that you will rarely find one which is perfect. Most of the time these flaws won’t even be visible to the naked eye so you will be able to get away with buying it anyway.

Cut—The more light reflection, the better!

The cut describes the shalt which is diamond had been cut into. There are loads of different ways you can cut a diamond and these are terms you will have likely heard of before. A round cut is the most common cut and is self explanatory. There are also cuts like princess, oval, cushion, radiant and emerald. The better the cut style you choose, the more light will reflect from the diamond and the better it will look.

Ultimately, you will be faced with a huge choice when it comes to diamonds, and you simply need to bear these factors in mind but choose the diamond which you fall in love with!
