From Gucci to Dior—Trans Model Harlow Monroe is Slaying the Fashion Scene

Canadian Transgender Model Harlow Monroe | The Lady-like Leopard by Melina Morry

For Canadian transgender model Harlow Monroe, the fashion world is her oyster. And a very expensive oyster at that. With names like Gucci, Dior and Loewe under her street-style-worthy belt, she’s gaining high-fashion momentum quicker than you can say Valentino. (Which, she also recently walked for.) As far as status goes, it’s safe to say that Harlow Monroe is well on her way to becoming the Gigi, Bella or Kendall of the trans fashion community.

As a Canadian transgender model, Harlow Monroe is paving the way for others to follow in her combat-boot-clad footsteps.

I caught up with Harlow recently about her career goals, her favourite designers and what she hopes to achieve next. After all, she’s showing no signs of slowing down. And when you’re able to gallivant around Paris, New York and London on the regular, why would you?

Where did fashion week end up taking you?

HM: Fashion week gave me the opportunity to travel a lot these past few months, and I got to meet and work with some amazing people and brands like Repossi and Loewe. I’ve made some pretty good friends along the way too. Excited to see what I’ll be doing next or what part of the world I’ll be in.

Which show was your favourite to walk in?

HM: It’s hard to say because I’m so happy with all of them. I honestly just feel so blessed and thankful that I’ve been able to work with some of the biggest brands in the industry like Dior, Loewe and Gucci.

Any backstage advice from seasoned supermodels?

HM: Just to be yourself and have fun!

What’s the next plan for your career?

HM: I’m not sure yet to be honest—more shows (I’m hoping) and some campaigns would be great, too. For me the most important thing is that I continue to enjoy what I’m doing.

How do you like to spend your time when you’re not modelling?

HM: I like hanging out with my friends of course, and exploring whatever city I’m in. I like doing anything artistic and inspiring. And of course, shopping!

What has the overall reaction been to you being one of very few trans models in the industry?

HM: It’s actually been really amazing! Everyone has been so nice and supportive. Everyone has made me feel really at home and I feel so lucky to have such an incredible support system within the industry.

Have you had to face any tough issues while starting out in your modelling career?

HM: I guess having to be “on” all the time has been an adjustment, but it really helps you get used to being your best self all the time. It truly is empowering but definitely takes work and dedication.

Which designer are you hoping to walk for or collab with next?

HM: There are so many incredible and talented designers I’d love to work with; Valentino, McQueen, the list goes on! When I first got started, Dior really launched my career so I’d love to work with them again to come full circle.
