Why it’s Not Always a Bad Thing to Get Fired From (or Quit) Your Job

You got fired. Big deal. Yes, it can be, but what we sometimes don’t realize is that it’s not always a bad thing. Getting fired from your job can be the blessing in disguise that you didn’t even know you were waiting for.

It can be, in one word: freedom.

I’ve sort of gotten fired from a job before—I won’t go into details, but I will say that even though it was shocking to have a discussion about how my employers thought I should move onto bigger and better things, I was a little bit relieved. Now I could focus full time on something I actually wanted to do!

We all can get stuck in the rut of our daily lives (which I totally was), working a job that we don’t necessarily love. All of a sudden, we’re fired. Panicking aside, here’s why getting fired isn’t always a bad thing—and I speak from experience.

Why Getting Fired From Your Job Isn’t a Bad Thing

You can take this time to try out a different career

Maybe your parents—or any other big influence in your life—persuaded you into taking a really good job straight out of university. It’s not what you love, but you’re afraid to let a good job go. Well, getting fired can be the exact thing you need to try out that other career you’ve been dreaming about.

You can take that trip you’ve been planning for months

This is a good time to just pack up and go! Before you get stuck in a lifelong career, go explore the world. It’ll help you grow as a person and let you see your life (and the world) in a whole new way. A one-way ticket to South-East Asia? Yes, please.

You can learn to stop second guessing yourself

A big reason young people get fired is because they’re afraid to take initiative. It’s true. How many times has your boss asked for your opinion and you’ve hesitated just long enough to make them second-guess your answer? You need to believe in yourself and be confident that you are that good.

You’ll be forced outside of your comfort zone

Sometimes you get too comfortable in a job. You’re thinking of leaving but the comfort of your daily routine is holding you back. Getting fired can be the push you need to think outside the box and start seeing your life through a new perspective.

You can see it like your rite of passage

Getting fired from your job will end your agonizing decision of ‘should I stay or should I go’? It will also be like a rite of passage into the long working life that you have ahead of you. So, you made a mistake. Learn from yourself and use it to make your next career move your best one yet.
