The Secret to Wearing White in the Winter — and All Year ‘Round

When you were growing up, your mother or your grandmother or whoever was teaching you about what’s “right and wrong” in terms of fashion probably told you that it was strictly prohibited to wear white after Labour Day. Just, wrong. A fashion faux pas! Well, I’m here to tell you that’s no longer the case – if it ever really was a case to begin with. Winter whites are all the rage. Seriously.

Once considered just a ‘summer fashion’ colour (ahem, I mean neutral), white was seen as something you’d wear in the warmer months – and when winter rolled around it was time to get out the burgundy knits, the navy pea coats and the charcoal tights.

You could say I’m a bit of a rebel but I’ve never been one to follow fashion rules. Wearing white after Labour Day is too good to pass up, so here’s how you can get away with it flawlessly.

Choose longer hemlines

Obviously you’re not going to wear a white summer mini dress in the dead of winter (and if you are wearing something super short, wear tights!). Choose longer hems on both your bottoms and tops for a more winter appropriate #ootd. I love the winter whites look of midi skirts with a longer, oversized sweatshirt and cute ankle boots.

Go for chunkier fabrics

Heavier, chunkier white fabrics look much more winter-appropriate. A chiffon blouse? Not so much. But a warm and cozy cable-knit turtleneck will do just the trick. Besides looking more winterish, a heavier fabric keeps you warmer too (obviously). Try pairing a chunky white sweater dress with over the knee leather boots for an on-trend winter look.

Avoid blindingly bright whites

We’re not trying to match the snow here, okay? There’s not need to be dressed in head-to-toe bleached whites. I like wearing a super white t-shirt with off-white jeans and maybe a cream coloured sweater – that way it breaks up the solidity of the white on white and adds a nice monochrome look to your outfit.

handmade bag from market in Mexico

On a little side note, I’ve been getting tons of compliments on this bag lately! These kind of bags are so on trend right now. I actually bought this one 7 years ago in Mexico from a little market in Playa del Carmen for about $20. This girl the other day asked me if it was from Urban Outfitters and said her friend paid about $100 for hers! Crazy.
